| Situated
midway between Madison Junction and Mammoth this area has two parts
to explore which offer a wide variety of thermal activities. The
best of these is the Black Basin Trail. The trail takes about 2
hours and passes a number of excellent geysers. The first of these
is Steamboat Geyser, which is the world’s tallest active geyser.
It can erupt to more than 300 feet although eruptions are rare with
years between activities.
Cistern
Geyser is linked by underground channels to Steamboat Geyser. Cistern
Geyser has a beautiful blue pool, however the run off areas offer
colours ranging from cream to deep brown. The other geyser of note
is Echinus Geyser, which regularly erupts every 35-90 minutes reaching
a height of 40-60 feet. Echinus is the largest acid water geyser
known. Other geysers of note are Veteran and Pork Chop. Green Dragon
Spring is also an interesting thermal feature.
