I spent the best part of 3 months visiting this solitary nest on the River Mole, running through the London suburb of Molesey. At first the birds were, understandably, very cautious of my presence but as time passed they began not to worry about my being near them. Unlike traditional years, this pair of Grebes had two flocks of chicks. The first, due to the rather warm weather conditions, was very early and sadly only one chick survived. The second flock were much more successful with all the eggs hatching and chicks surviving.

The majority of images show the younger chicks but their elder sibling, a very different looking chick, can also be seen.

Over the months I spent in the company of these birds, I felt like I developed a bond with them, one which is very difficult to explain. I had studied them and learnt their routines, an experience I feel honoured to have had and one which I will never forget.
